West Notts College: Renewables, electricity and energy, energy efficient building products.

Specialist Advisor: Jim Harvey

I am delighted to be working for West Notts College (WNC) with colleagues throughout other FE Colleges in the East Midlands, Nottingham Trent University and NTI on this Innovation in Sustainable Construction Pathfinder project exploring innovation in sustainable construction. The College will be taking a lead in this project looking at renewable energy and energy efficiency for homes, which are vitally important issues when gas and electricity prices have been rising rapidly and when tighter building regulations and legislation mean low carbon measures are increasingly non-optional.

As an experiences surveyor, BREEAM assessor and sustainability consultant in industry and the public sector (such as local authorities and the British Geological Survey in Keyworth) I am ideally suited to develop this project and meet all its outcomes. It is thrilling that WNC and the Innovation in Sustainable Construction Pathfinder Project is developing its world class work in supporting local businesses develop and grow in these difficult economic times through innovation in products and processes; if we think of the car industry, new models with better specifications mean growing business and Kodak stopped producing film in favour of digital only. Likewise businesses must move with the times and grow with new technology. As construction is at the forefront of meeting the challenges of the low carbon economy, the help and support of WNC and the Pathfinder Project will be a crucial source of knowledge and expertise for businesses to access.

This project will develop WNC as a Centre of Excellence in renewable energy and electricity and energy efficiency, at the forefront of sustainability and offering education that equips people for the future. It will contribute to WNC's ability, as an OFSTED "outstanding" rated college, to build on its reputation and help learners and local businesses to access expert specialist knowledge to develop knowledge, business and growth, and create outstanding Knowledge Transfer opportunities.

The Pathfinder Project team will examine what innovative components are available, raise knowledge and understanding in construction of new sustainable components and processes and help meet Government targets in improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
