Derby College: Construction Innovation and Sustainability
Specialist Advisor: Martin Jones
I began my working career as a bricklayer and have worked at Derby College for over 20 years teaching in construction, working with apprentices, full time and pre 16 learners. As a Learning Director I have mentored and coached staff in teaching and learning.
Experiences as competitor, team leader, judge and world skills technical expert at Regional, National and International Skills Competitions, has given me the opportunity to appreciate and see Industry technologies, skills, knowledge and practices change over time.
As Specialist Adviser for the Construction Innovation and Sustainability project, our focus at Derby College is to promote Modern Methods of Construction and Off Site Manufacture. With attending recent seminars, workshops and exhibitions there are many manufacturers, product suppliers, contractors and specifiers that are already engaged in exploring new technologies and practices.
Research and visits to manufacturers include new factory for pre cast concrete structures, smart foundations for housing, timber frames and panels (case study1), steel framed structures and modular volumetric buildings.
