Leicester College: Weather compensating controls, dual fuel systems.
Specialist Advisor: James Woodford
In 2002 I re-trained as a plumber studying level two at Leicester College, continuing with my level three at Stephenson’s College in Coalville. Whist I was undertaking my training, I was given the responsibility of mentoring two apprentices for the firm I was working for. I was already gaining immense satisfaction from my job and the added advantage of passing my knowledge on helped that satisfaction grow. I set up my own business in April 2008 and worked all over the Midlands on various projects, the largest being eight student houses in Loughborough.
I was employed by Leicester College in June 2009 as a Lead Trainer in renewable technologies. My role is to help the construction department decide on what renewable courses to offer and to have input in developing those courses. I will also be designing and installing various renewable technology systems that will not only be used as teaching aids, to give learners hands on experience, but the systems will be fully functioning to help make Leicester College greener. Earlier this year, the College won the National Green Gown Award for Sustainability in the Carbon Reduction category, so it already has excellent green credentials. My aim is to continue working towards carbon reduction and to ensure that the College is an example of best practice with regards to renewable technologies.
Also I will be training some of the Leicester College construction lecturers to deliver the renewable courses and I myself will be involved in delivering day courses in renewables to installers throughout the industry.
As a Specialist Advisor for the Construction Innovation and Sustainability Project, my role is to focus on two areas, weather compensation controls and ways of interlinking two or more heat sources into a heating system. Through research, attending seminars and exhibitions, and visiting manufacturers of these technologies my aim is to develop and build on my knowledge base to be in good stead to help or advise any individual or company.
