Chesterfield College: Water Management - rainwater harvesting,greywater recycling and water saving appliances.

My first taste of construction was through the trade of bricklayer/ Stone mason and general building, mainly working on speculative projects or bespoke domestic housing.
I moved into education at Chesterfield College some 21 years ago, teaching across a range of areas from craft courses through to ONC, HNC and Foundation Degrees. During this time I continued my educational path up to Masters Degree level, including a range of specific educational and construction related activities.
As Specialist Adviser for the Innovation in Sustainable Construction project, our focus at Chesterfield College is to promote the management of water through Rainwater Harvesting, Grey Water Recycling and water saving appliances such as waterless urinals, low volume flush toilets and reduced flow taps and shower heads. Having attended seminars, workshops and exhibitions in the UK and Europe, there are many manufacturers, product suppliers, contractors and specifiers that are already engaged in exploring new technologies and practices. The knowledge base of installers however is quite varied, and the project is tasked with addressing this issue.
Over the forthcoming years I will be developing the resource base within the college, preparing learning materials and increasing the demonstration models we have, with a view to supporting local industry, the East Midlands network and providing solutions to problems from designers, specifiers and contractors etc. Transfer of knowledge gained will be through dissemination between college staff and onwards to students as well as between the specialist advisors at each college within the pathfinder project.
