Taste and flavour is recipe for success

28/07/2008

Flavometrix Limited was formed in 2004 by Professor Andy Taylor and is based at the Department of Food Science at The University of Nottingham’s Sutton Bonington Campus. The company uses high-tech equipment and techniques to carry out contract research and development for the food and pharmaceutical industries

Using cutting edge technology, Flavometrix looks at how flavours and aromas are released over time during eating or in particular manufacturing processes. They have also developed a unique taste-aroma delivery system that can help reformulate products so they can contain less salt or sugar whilst still maintaining a great flavour. Clients include PepsiCo, Masterfoods and Tate & Lyle.

Thanks to a grant from the East Midlands New Technology Initiative (NTI) Food and Drink Network, Flavometrix’s highly skilled team of staff now has a new mass spectrometer to enable further analysis of flavours and fragrances. Productivity has increased and is expected to be up by at least 20% over the coming year because the company is now using its own equipment and has no need to hire.

Research and Development manager at Flavometrix Ltd, Dr Jim Davidson, says: “Investments in technology and training are very important to our business. We rely heavily on our innovative technology and we are always looking for new ways of improving what we do.”

As part of the NTI funding programme, training will also be undertaken by staff at Flavometrix in product development at the end of 2008.
