NTI grant recipients continue award winning success
22/11/2007
Active Ingredient, one of the first companies to receive an East Midlands NTI Creative Industries Network grant, has added another award to their trophy shelf.
The company won the Nokia Ubimedia Mind Trek Award for their mobile phone game, Heartlands (marketed in the UK as ‘Ere be dragons) created in partnership with the Mixed Reality Lab and the University of Nottingham. They won the top prize out of 140 international entries.
Heartlands is a game controlled by the player’s heart rate. As a player takes a walk, their journey is mapped on their mobile phone by GPS and a heart rate monitor tracks the player’s heart rate. The goal is to keep their heart rate healthy as they explore, in order to score points. An enchanting virtual map is recreated live on the mobile phone, reflecting the real journey as it happens.
The game was developed using equipment purchased with the East Midlands NTI grant.
The judges said of the game: “Art and technology are very rarely to be bound to reality this tight, making an ordinary activity like running an exciting and highly motivating task by means of ubiquitous media.”
Andy Luffman, NTI project manager, based at the University of Derby said: “New technology is now an integral part of modern media. Businesses and artists are uncovering amazing ways to link the two, to make entertainment and art available and accessible to the public. Active Ingredient has shown that the East Midlands is producing world class art.”
