Non destructive testing course breaks new ground

26/09/2007

East Midlands NTI has achieved another UK first with the launch of a unique Foundation Degree in Non Destructive Testing (NDT), being run jointly by the University of Northampton with the British Institute of Non Destructive Testing.

NDT is the branch of engineering which evaluates flaws in materials, assessing safety and quality control. Examples of use include detecting erosion or cracking in concrete, testing aircraft skins, underground pipe integrity or wire ropes on suspension bridges. The essential feature of NDT is that the test process has no detrimental effect on the material or structure being tested.

The course is primarily delivered through distance learning. Successful completion will give access to a BSc degree and a full honours degree in NDT. It is being run by the University of Northampton School of Applied Sciences in partnership with the East Midlands NTI High Performance Engineering Network.

Extensive ‘needs assessments’ with local businesses led to the setting up of a bespoke High Performance Engineering Motor Sport Foundation Degree. This development provided further insights into the industry’s needs leading to the new NDT Foundation Degree.

Capital funding from the East Midlands NTI made the course possible.

NTI High Performance Network Leader, James Powell said: “The course has been successful on many levels. It unlocked another route for collaboration between the University of Northampton and the British Institute of Non Destructive Testing. Another spin off from the NTI liaison with businesses has been the identification and provision of short courses for industry such as the two day Data Logging courses. All through this academic/ professional/ industry collaboration the NTI has been a catalyst helping to raise the profile and competitiveness of the East Midlands region.”
