Metrology At DMU

Metrology made easy at De Montfort University

26/09/2007

More than 40 students from De Montfort University (DMU) will be armed with new skills when they start their first jobs thanks to sophisticated measuring equipment, part funded by NTI.

The Faro Gold Series articulated measuring arm is being used at DMU to teach undergraduate students about modern approaches to metrology - the science of measurement.

In industry Metrology includes checking the suitability of measurement instruments, their calibration and quality control of measurements.

As the new measuring arm is portable it can measure parts wherever they are located. It is also very user friendly compared to conventional coordinate measuring machines, and is now in commonplace use in companies such as Land Rover and BAE Systems. The arm at DMU is linked directly to Delcam’s PowerINSPECT software, also purchased with support from NTI, allowing rapid capture and processing of data to produce clear part accuracy reports.

In the last 6 months over 40 final year undergraduate students from a wide range of courses within the Faculty of Computing Sciences and Engineering have been shown how to use the arm, and given the chance to measure parts for themselves.

The full-time students who are now entering industry and the part-time students, sponsored by companies such as Hampson Aerospace in Leicester, will help to introduce new technology by applying what they have learned at DMU.
