Leicester businesses go serious gaming
10/11/2006
Technology developed for on-line gaming is stirring up interest in the Leicester business community.
A seminar for local businesses held at the LCB Depot, Rutland Street, Leicester, on the serious use of gaming applications was a sell out. Speakers included some of Europe’s top names in on-line communication, and delegates took part in a live link seminar from India using web conference technology.
It is a sign that local businesses are waking up to the core opportunities of new technology says organiser, David Wortley: “A huge amount of research and resources have been fed into creating stunning games for kids to play on their Playstations, X Boxes and computers. But the wider applications for that technology are beginning to filter into main-stream business. In the seminar we were able to demonstrate how effective today’s virtual conferencing is, and the accessibility of putting education, promotions and design to the public in a highly entertaining and lively way.”
The seminar was organised by David Wortley at the East Midlands New Technology Initiative (NTI) Creative Industries Centre for Knowledge Exchange, which is a partnership between De Montfort University and the University of Derby. Businesses that could not attend the event were able to follow the seminar on-line.
East Midlands NTI is an initiative backed by the region’s leading colleges and universities. NTI provides matched funded grants of up to £10,000 to small and medium sized firms to invest in state of the art technology, and gain advanced technology skills through NTI approved courses. It is funded by the East Midlands Development Agency (emda), Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and Learning and Skills Council (LSC).
