Creative Businesses share £150k for new technology

16/11/2006

Local businesses have had over £150,000 in capital grants in six months through the East Midlands New Technology Initiative (NTI). Further funding is still available for businesses operating in the Creative Industries.

The grants enable small and medium sized firms to become more competitive by investing in the latest technology and training. As part of the funding package, businesses commit to enrolling members of staff on NTI approved courses at local universities and colleges. Universities and colleges within the NTI Network have also been given funding for state of the art equipment, so that local firms can have access to the latest technology.

It’s a win-win situation says East Midlands NTI executive director, Hilary Whaley: “Our colleges and universities house some of the region’s finest technology and expertise. Through the NTI we have been able to pave the way for small and medium sized companies to work with some of the leading experts in their field, develop new products and learn advanced skills on cutting edge technology. Additionally, we are able to give substantial grants so they can invest in their own businesses.

“We have entered a new phase of funding and are inviting businesses in the Creative Industries to find out how they could benefit too.”

East Midlands NTI is an initiative backed by the region’s leading colleges and universities. NTI provides matched funded grants of up to £10,000 to small and medium sized firms to invest in state of the art technology, and gain advanced technology skills through NTI approved courses. It is funded by the East Midlands Development Agency (emda), Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and Learning and Skills Council (LSC).
